CDC to conduct health study in Greenville County
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to conduct health study in Greenville County
Simpsonville, S.C. — Personnel from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will be conducting a health survey in Greenville County Aug. 31-Nov. 10, according to a news release provided by CDC official George W. Zipf.
Interviewers will call designated households to administer the National Health and Nutrition Examination Study (NHANES) to a sample of 501 people, the release said. To identify the sampled people, interviewers will ask for demographic information.
"It is important for us to assure (the City of Simpsonville) and county residents that this legitimate survey is a federally funded national effort with significant influence on health policy across the nation,” Zipf wrote. “We are informing the appropriate officials of the county and local governments and medical and dental societies about this survey.”
The CDC is also notifying local law enforcement officials.
Administered by the National Center for Health Statistics, the NHANES has been used for more than half a century to monitor the health of U.S. residents of all ages, according to the release.
“Recent NHANES data has been used to monitor trends in obesity prevalence among children and adults, and has been used to evaluate the effectiveness of HPV vaccinations,” Zipf wrote.
Data is collected through household interviews and standardized medical examinations in a CDC mobile examination center, according to the release. Primary data users are federal agencies that developed the survey, National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration and CDC, according to a National Center for Health Statistics brochure.
Diseases, medical conditions and health indicators to be studied include heart diseases, diabetes, infectious diseases, nutrition, obesity, oral health and respiratory diseases, according to the brochure.
