Help prevent sewer backups, overflow

Simpsonville, S.C. — With the potential for shortages in toilet paper during the Novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 global pandemic, the Simpsonville Public Works Department is reminding the public to avoid using items in lieu of toilet paper that are not safe for sewers.

The public is asked to not flush wipes, paper towels or other paper products in toilets. Toilet paper is the only sewer-safe product that can enter the sewer system.

“Failure to follow these guidelines can result in sewer backups and overflows,” Public Works Director Andy West said. “Backups and overflows cause property damage, endanger the environment and create a public health concern.”

Anyone with sewer issues can reach Public Works by calling 864-967-9531 between 6:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. or public safety dispatch at 864-967-9536 after hours.
