Public Works - COVID-19
Preventing Overflow & Sewer Backups
- Avoid using items in lieu of toilet paper that are not safe for sewers
- Do NOT use the following items in lieu of toilet paper:
- Paper towels
- Baby wipes
- Makeup wipes
- Tampons
- Sanitary napkins
- Prophylactics
- Using items in lieu of toilet paper that are not safe for sewers can cause overflows and sewer backups
- Overflows and sewer backups can cause property damage, endanger the environment and create a public health concern
- Anyone with sewer issues can reach Public Works by calling 864-967-9531 Monday - Friday at 6:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. or public safety dispatch at 864-967-9536 after hours
Yard Waste Pickup
The volume of yard waste and brush inside the city limits increased the past few months due to combination of an uptick in yard work as a result of the stay-at-home order issued by Gov. Henry McMaster, severe weather, decrease in staff during the stay-at-home order and equipment repairs.
- The trucks visit each area of the City as fast possible.
- If yard waste is not picked up, please check the following:
- All leaves, pine needles, hedge clippings and grass clippings must be bagged and separated from other yard debris
- Bags must weigh no more than 50 pounds; ACE Environmental will not pick up bags that weigh more than 50 pounds.
- Only leaves, pine needles, hedge clippings and grass clippings generated from residential property are collected
- ACE Environmental will pick up bags of yard waste that adhere to guidelines on trash pickup days
- If you are concerned about the pickup of yard waste, you may call 864-967-9531.
Brush Collection
- Due to staffing, number of trucks and lack of other resources, there is no set schedule for collection; the length of time between collections at any one residence is determined by how heavy the volume is at that particular time
- The City does not collect materials generated by contractors
- Brush should be placed a minimum of 3 feet from the edge of the curb or pavement and at least 5 feet away from obstructio
- ns, such as automobiles, fences, mailboxes, power poles and shrubs
- Do not mix loose brush with other yard waste
- Loose brush must not exceed 6" in diameter nor 6' in length; all brush removal is limited in quantity to 2 yards or approximately 1 pickup truck load per pickup
- Abnormal quantities of trimmings or clearings, tree and stump removals should be transported to the landfill by the owner or contractor
Reasons Brush May Not Have Been Picked Up
- Brush is not a minimum of 3 feet from the edge of the curb or pavement or 5 feet from obstructions, such as automobiles
- Brush exceeds 6" in diameter or 6' in length
- Brush is in the road or on the sidewalk
- Amount of brush is an abnormal quantity of trimmings, lot clearings and tree or stump removals
- Brush is mixed with other yard waste; dirt remains on root balls
- Brush is leftover from a contractor
