Police increase enforcement of unlawful use of medians
Driving in medians carries $230 fine
Simpsonville, S.C. — The Simpsonville Police Department Traffic Team is enhancing enforcement of the Unlawful Use of Medians on Fairview and Harrison Bridge roads to deter motorists from driving in medians to bypass traffic and enter a left turn lane.
Driving in a median without the intention of turning left or pulling out of a driveway is illegal, according to Traffic Safety Ofc. Adam Bradshaw.
"The intent of a median is to keep motorists safe as they attempt to safely cross lanes of travel on high population roadways," Bradshaw said. "Motorists who decide to drive in a median place the safety of lawful drivers at risk."
Additionally, drivers near an intersection who "stack" or idle in the median while waiting to turn at a green light are also in violation of the law.
"Both actions of driving and stacking in the median create a severe safety issue," Bradshaw said.
A citation issued for driving in the median could result in a $230 fine and 4 points.
"As always, we ask that motorists drive safe, slow down, drive sober, buckle up and put down their phones," Bradshaw said.
