From the Ellipse: Council Recap | 08-12-2025

Simpsonville City Council held a regularly scheduled business meeting on Aug. 12, 2025 in Council Chambers a.k.a. “The Ellipse.” Below is a recap of the meeting:

Meeting Audio

Present: Councilman Chad O’Rear (Ward 1), Councilman Aaron Rupe (Ward 2), Councilwoman Shannon Williams (Ward 3), Councilwoman Sherry Roche (Ward 4), Councilman Tim Pinkerton (Ward 5), Councilman Lou Hutchings (Ward 6), Mayor Paul Shewmaker

  • City Council approved the minutes as written without objection.
  • During the Citizen Comments item of the agenda, a Ms. Nancy Dodge requested City Council to enact an ordinance regulating the use or operation of golf carts for the purpose of transportation, specifically during concerts at the CCNB Amphitheatre at Heritage Park. Ms. Dodge cited the prospect of improved safety for concert-goers if such a service existed. Ms. Dodge also expressed interest in obtaining a business license for her business upon the creation of said ordinance.
  • By a vote of 7-0, City Council adopted Resolution R-2025-03. Proposed by Councilman Lou Hutchings at the Committee of the Whole meeting in July, Resolution R-2025-03 designates the song “Simpsonville (Simply Home)” by Steve Eager as the official anthem of the City of Simpsonville. Mr. Hutchings read the resolution, and Mr. Eager acknowledged and thanked individuals who played a key role in the song and music video. After the vote, Mayor Paul Shewmaker played the full version of the music video for those in attendance.
  • By a vote of 7-0, City Council appointed Maria Tooley as treasurer for the City of Simpsonville. Mayor Shewmaker conducted the swearing-in of Ms. Tooley immediately after the vote. Formerly a senior budget analyst for Greenville County, Ms. Tooley was also hired for the role of Finance Director and assumes both roles this month. City Administrator Tee Coker told Council that Ms. Tooley is “very experienced and highly professional.”

The meeting started at 6 p.m., and City Council adjourned at 6:17 p.m.
