Internship
Purpose
The Simpsonville Police Department currently offers junior and senior college students who are interested in a career in law enforcement a rewarding experience into the profession by offering a 8-12 week educational program. (based on the requirements of the partnering academic institution)
Participants will have the opportunity to mentor and shadow both certified and non-certified civilian law enforcement staff to achieve a holistic experience to the industry. It is our goal to assist qualified candidates who are truly interested in a career in law enforcement the education and professional skills necessary to be successful post graduation through this hands-on learning experience.
Application Process
Students interested in applying for the program must provide the following items:
- Professional Resume or C/V
- Provide a letter of recommendation from a professor or academic advisor from an accredited criminal justice program or criminal justice department of a college or university or related program to be considered.
- Complete an in-person interview with the Admin Lieutenant after applying to determine the applicant’s overall suitability for the program.
- Provide a short statement outlining what you hope to gain out of this internship and with this department (approx. 200 words).
Payment / Commitment
Students will not receive any monetary compensation while participating in the program. Students approved for the program must complete the total hours assigned by their respective educational institution in order to receive credit. The program is designed for the student to work in different divisions of the department. Schedules are subject to change based on department needs, the student’s school schedule and other factors. The department will work closely with the student intern and their class schedule.
Eligibility
In order to be considered for the internship program, the applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Applicants must be 18 years of age or older
- Must be currently enrolled in a college/university criminal justice or related program
- Must be considered a junior or senior at the college/university
- Must successfully pass a standard background check that includes an NCIC criminal history check and driver’s record check performed by the Simpsonville Police Department
- Must successfully pass a drug test
- Must be willing to complete any and all waiver requests
- Must agree to abide by all department requirements and policies
The student will be admitted to the program once final approval is received from the Chief of Police. Both the institution and applicant will receive a notice in writing of approval or denial to the program. If approved, the applicant will receive an official letter of acceptance and begin coordinating with the Admin Lieutenant their scheduled program start date.
Coordination and Scheduling
The Administrative Lieutenant is responsible for coordinating and scheduling the program with the student throughout the student’s time in the program. The Lieutenant will make contact with the applicant to begin the program.
